ABAN: Changing Women’s Lives In Ghana
ABAN (A Ban Against Neglect) Changing Women’s Lives In Ghana
The concept for the accessory brand, ABAN, began back in 2008 at University of Ghana. Two of the three founders, Callie Brauel and Emmanuel Quarmyne, met during a project for their non-governmental organization management class.
Their project was a model organization that took water bags from the streets of Accra, the capital of Ghana, and turned them into new high-quality products. During the same time, Brauel and third founder, Rebecca Brandt became friends while volunteering for two organizations that benefit children who live on the streets.
Since all three individuals shared a passion for putting an end to poverty and the injustices faced by young women, they decided they would help to empower those affected by these issues by creating A Ban Against Neglect (ABAN). Between the years of 2008 and 2010, Brauel, Quarmyne, and Brandt sold products to help the young people of Accra. By 2010, the founders had won the Carolina Challenge, a University of North Carolina business competition. With the funding they were awarded, they were able to list ABAN as a nonprofit and even recruit 12 young mothers from Accra.
All ABAN accessories and keychains are handmade in Ghana using traditional Ghanaian fabrics that were created especially for ABAN, recycled glass, and recycled water bags. To purchase a handbag, clutch, case for your smart device, or luggage tag, you can go to aban.org where you can buy their pieces online or find a store near you that carries ABAN accessories.
