Fit Into That Dress: Burn Off Turkey Day With Yoga!

Chang up your workout and burn off Thanksgiving day by adding in Bikram or Hot Yoga!  But first a little education on the two.

Bikram Yoga is a form of yoga that was arranged by Bikram Choudhury from traditional Hatha Yoga.  There are 12 standing and 12 floor postures used in every Bikram Yoga class.  Bikram classes are 90 minutes and are taught in a room heated to 105°F with 40% humidity.

Hot Yoga, which is often categorized under Bikram Yoga, is actually any form of yoga performed under hot and humid conditions.  This allows for more of a variety of postures to be used in each class.

Both forms of yoga help improve circulation, heat allows for increased comfort as you stretch and decreases injury.  Be forewarned….YOU WILL SWEAT A LOT!  However, the sweat helps to cool your body during the class and detox the system.  Most importantly you can burn anywhere from 600 to 1000 calories in one 90 minute class (yes you read that right 600 to 1000 calories).  According to LiveStrong.org a 90 minute hot yoga class is equivalent to jogging an hour and fifteen minutes.

I have done both forms of yoga and find enjoyment is both.  Bikram is a bit more structured since they only perform 24 postures while Hot Yoga can vary each class.  Also, in my Hot Yoga music is played which tends to help me get through those last 30 minutes.  Either way they are both great ways to burn off the holiday food.

Lets go!  Burn off turkey day before Christmas gets here!

Tanya
