Mrs. Obama Puts Nigerian Designer on The Map by ~The NatuRebel

The First Lady isn’t the only one scouting one-of-a-kind clothing from emerging black designers. There is no question that Michelle Obama’s choice in clothing has put the spotlight on Tracy Reese and the little-known designer Laura Smalls. There is also no doubt in our minds that if the First Lady wears your clothing, you are destined to succeed. But when Mrs. Obama gracefully flaunts pieces from your clothing line once, twice and even three times, rest assured that you have made it to the top; large retailers will come knocking at your door.

That’s exactly what happened to Nigerian born designer Duro Olowu who was just picked up by a struggling J C Penny. The Michelle Obama approved designer’s line will become part of their shop-in-shop strategy, and does not stray from the girl-next-door image J C Penny is known for. However, one thing is for certain, Duro Olowu is sure to add a little vintage pizazz.

Now we are all for retro seventies-style getups and recycled African prints, but when this timeless fashion mingles with kinky hair and blow-out updos, us naturals feel ever so close to home.

However, we just have one request. Before the stylish Michelle Obama leaves the White House four years from now, we would like to see her in yet another Duro Owolu dress; but this time with natural hair and kinky twists.
