Nigerian Style – Designer Niyi Okuboyejo of Post-Imperial

Post-Imperial combines preppy American menswear with an African flair.

The menswear accessory line created by Niyi Okuboyejo features bandanas, pocket squares, scarves, and ties. Their goal is to recreate design standards of long-ago and today for the future.  Niyi Okuboyejo studied fashion design at Parsons School of Design and even though he was passionate about menswear he focused mainly on womenwear while in school. Following school, Okuboyejo was able to work for Oscar de La Renta for two years as well as intern at Yigal Azrouël and Patrik Ervell where he was then able to express his interest in men’s clothing and accessories. His experience working for such accomplished designers as well as his education is what prompted him to start his own fashion accessory line.

When you see Post-Imperial accessories, you will agree that the look and feel of Okuboyejo’s collection can be described as colorful and vibrant. While the design house is based in Harlem, New York, Post-Imperial’s fabrics come from countries all over the world such as, Italy and Japan. Nee Okuboyejo’s Yoruba heritage is seen in the prints and patterns of his pieces. He uses Adire, a rare and long-established hand-dyeing technique that originated in Yoruba, along with his own personal motifs to create contemporary yet classic style.
