Summer in New York is all about artist summer stages. The beautiful weather and iconic surroundings make NYC the perfect home for some of the country’s biggest festivals. While the Governors Ball and Celebrate Brooklyn! are two of the most notable outdoor celebrations, Afropunk is gunning to become the “it” festival of New York.

Afropunk began in 2005 and provides a voice to multicultural people that strongly identify with the indie rock, punk, and hardcore scene. In addition to being one of the most diverse and open-minded festivals to date, there are a handful of other reasons why we should all love Afropunk.

At this Brooklyn based event, there is something for everybody. From musical performances to skating events, you will be immersed in entertainment the whole day. The lineup of musicians for this year’s festival includes some of music’s most memorable artists like Lenny Kravitz and Kelis, who are sure to give an unforgettable performance. Additionally, Afropunk’s roster incorporates some of today’s upcoming artists, which allows fans to be exposed to new music and even find a new favorite artist.

Without a doubt, Afropunk heavily focuses on the music. However, you will also be able to enjoy some great food and do a little shopping as well while you’re there. The areas surrounding the festival grounds are lined with all sorts of food vendors. Everything from sandwiches to tacos are waiting to be consumed by you. The Afropunk festival grounds are also home to their Spinthrift Market. The market features 90 of the most talented local artists who create clothing, crafts, and other art.

This Summer, Afropunk is taking place on August 22-23 in Commodore Barry Park. To receive entry to the festival you may either purchase tickets on their website or participate in their earned ticket program. This program allows fans to volunteer for outreach programs and in turn receive one ticket to attend Afropunk.  To purchase your ticket click here!
